Thakkali chutney / Tomato chutney

Tomato chutney is the most common side dish for idli dosa. Here is a very easy tomato chutney recipe. You can increase or decrease the amount of red chillies that you add to make it more or less spicier. You can add a garlic pod and an inch of ginger piece too. For tempering I have used only mustard seeds but you can also add urad and curry leaves. This chutney can also be spread on bread and toasted with butter which gives you a tangy and spicy bread toast.

Ingredients :
  • Tomato -2 medium size
  • Onion-1 large
  • Red chilly-4
  • Salt
  • Oil-4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds -1 tsp

Preparation : 
  • In a pan heat 2 tsp of oil. Add the red chilly.
  • Ad onions and Saute and then the tomato.
  • Saute until tomato is cooked.
  • Switch off flame and let it cool.
  • Add it to a mixie jar, add needed salt and grind smooth.
  • Transfer to a bowl.
  • In the same pan add two tsp of oil and heat. Add the mustard seeds. Pour this into the chutney.
  • Mix and serve with hot idlis or dosa.
