Dhal fry/pasi parupu kadayal

Dhal fry is a good combo for chappathi or roti and is healthy as well. It is prepared using Moong dhal. I have added potatoes and green peas to it but it is usually made plain in restaurants.
This is also a good side dish for idli and dosa. My mom prepares it often for chappathi and its a family favorite.  This can also be mixed with rice and had with papad and pickle.

Ingredients :

  • Moong dhal-1 cup
  • Potato and peas-1/4 cup
  • Onion-1
  • Tomato-1
  • Curry leaves-few
  • Sambar powder-1 tbsp
  • Oil-4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds-1tsp
  • Cumin-1tsp
  • Coriander leaves

Preparation :

  • Cook Moong dhal and tomato in a pressure cooker for 6 whistles or until dhal is mushy.
  • Add oil or ghee in a pan and heat it.
  • Add the mustard and cumin seeds.
  • Add curry leaves and onion and saute for a minute.
  • Add the boiled and cut potato cubes and green peas and saute.
  • Now take the Tomato and dhal from the cooker.
  • Remove the skin from the Tomato and mash it well. Mash the dhal too.
  • Add the mashed tomato to the dhal and mix well.
  • Pour this into the pan. Add sambar powder and salt and mix well.
  • Let it boil for a minute or two until raw smell of sambar powder leaves.
  • Switch off flame and mix in coriander leaves.
  • Serve with chappathi or roti. Can be had with idli or dosa too.
